is house/House in Kitanyuugura

House in Kitanyuugura, a private residence located in the city of Sanjo, Niigata prefecture, Japan.
The 137 sqm project combines two contrasting, intersecting volumes: a long, white-hued one on the ground floor; and a dark-toned cube above it.seeking to bring as much sunlight as possible within the dwelling’s interior, the architects have fitted a large window on the cube’s southwestern side, while a striped awning protects inside spaces from excess summer light.

This house has been developed according to the owners’ request for an open plan space with a large bookshelf, and a variety of interior areas where one can read books calmly. large openings throughout, benches, study desks and soft furnishings create a relaxed atmosphere inside the residence, while the double-height space generated by the intersection of the two volumes offers a sense of lightness and openness. the large window on the southwestern side provides the interior with plenty of natural light, while allowing solar radiation to enter the house and reach every corner. a stripped awning above the window adds a playful character to the building, protects inside spaces from excess sunlight, and invites users to sit under its shade on a concrete bench that extends from the residence’s ground floor.

On the north side, a large horizontal window with a width of six meters was installed, while the height of the ceiling was kept low so that the north garden lit by the southern sun could be seen. together, the two large windows create a continuous play between inside and outside, bringing sunlight and nature closer to the daily life of the owners. furthermore, these two openings enable a series of other uses and comforts that are continuously discovered by the residents as they interact with their domestic surroundings.
